Besides the well known medical professions such as physician, medical specialist or researcher, there are a lot more interesting career possibilities in (global) health care. With these short interviews we would like to introduce other interesting, sometimes unknown, professions.

HIV/AIDS ambassador

Marijke Wijnroks is HIV/AIDS ambassador for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. She represent the Dutch policy and priorities on HIV/AIDS, both in the Netherlands and international. After working as a doctor for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) she moved her career from being a practising doctor to a policy maker. wijnroks

A diverse career in public health

Ferko Öry is a medical doctor specialized in pediatrics but also in public health. His special interests brought him all over the world, where he worked at different levels of health care systems. Currently he is working at TNO in Leiden. His large contribution to the initiative PaceMaker, an organization that fights for the rights on health care of ethnic minorities, deserves special attention. ferko_portret

Jaap Koot lives in the Netherlands and is a medical doctor specialized in international public health. He is currently working as a public health consultant for the company Public Health Consultants in Action. He is specialized in health care management and works in the field of ‘evidence-based health care’ and quality assurance.

Dr. Henk Schallig, coordinator of Parasitology research at the Royal Tropical Institute in Amsterdam. He leads a research group currently comprising 15 people, who are working on parasitic diseases, mainly malaria, leishmaniasis and trypanosomiasis, both in the Netherlands and in developing countries.
