Most people who claim to know Africa can still only describe Africa with two words: “poor continent”. Less global health means more emergency aid
On war, calamities, poverty and medical dilemmas

Leo van Bergen
Download PDF
For a long time basic healthcare was neglected as doctor's work. But since thirty years many recommend it as the foremost medical strategy for developing countries, a development highly influenced by wartime experiences. However, basic healthcare is something entirely different than emergency aid during calamities and wars. They can even conflict, since emergency aid can hinder structural solutions for the problems leading to the disaster for which it became necessary. Medical attention should particularly focus on basic problems, independently from all parties involved in conflicts. For this basic healthcare - global health, health for all - is much more suited. haitiboy

Cardiovascular disease in poor resource settings
A neglected disease

Charles Agyemang
Download PDF
There is an increasing awareness of a global epidemic of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which includes hypertension, acute coronary syndrome, chronic heart failure, ischemic and hemorrhagic stroke and valvular disease. CVD is the leading cause of death and a major cause of disability and lost productivity in adults worldwide. In most high-income countries, CVD rates have declined progressively because of successful preventive strategies and improved treatment for acute CVD events. However, in many low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) CVD rates are increasing very fast and CVD is already the leading cause of death in many LMIC. weegschaal

Health is a political issue

Ellen Verheul and
Remco van de Pas
Nearly all countries have signed up to the right to the highest sustainable level of health of their citizens. For Wemos, advocating for this right for people in developing countries has become the central mission. The right to health obviously does not mean the right to be healthy, but the right to have access to health care and other health determinants. In this article Wemos describes their formation in 1981, their missions, their activities and the relevance of the issues Wemos is concerned with. scouts

Midnight in Africa

Ton van der Lee

Midnight in Africa. I wake up. Someone is pounding at the door.

I get out of bed, push away the mosquito netting, pull on some shorts and go downstairs.  I open the door and see three scared looking women from the small fishing village by the river near my house. They are supporting a young girl who is shaking and sweating…
