Global Medicine is brought to you by the International Federation of Medical Students' Associations

As each country has its own culture, language and climate, each country  also  suffers  from  its  own specific health problems. Global health is the collective term for the health situation all over the world. IFMSA's mission is to offer future physicians a comprehensive introduction to global health issues. With this we hope to develop culturally sensitive students of medicine and intent on influencing the transnational inequalities that shape the health of our planet. This magazine, produced especially for medical students, will hopefully contribute to achieving  this mission. We hope you will enjoy reading it! 20040604-1

After three decades of warfareand social destruction, a structural health care system in Cambodia is non-existing. Cambodians do not use public health care facilities, but visit their traditional healers or use very expensive private medical services. Health net International (HNI) works together with the local population to help build a better and structural public health care system in Cambodia. "Our projects have improved the quality and stimulated the use of public health care."

Agricultural chemicals are used heavily in farming to control pests. While all pesticides can harm humans, insecticides and herbicides cause most human poisoning. Pesticides affect humans through three mechanisms of entry: ingestion, inhalation and dermal absorption. In under-developed countries, the least expensive pesticides are utilized due the inability of farmers to purchase more expensive, safer products. As a by product of pesticide use, farmers and their families are affected daily with health problems directly resulting from pesticide exposure. Doctors for Global Health, in partnership with a rural Salvadoran community, conducted a study of pesticide use and practices to determine not only the negative health impacts of pesticide exposure, but also to work alongside the community to create positive, lasting interventions in the community. 20040612

"Banana plantations in Africa, Asia and Middle America, are threatened by a leaf spot disease called Black Sigatoka disease. The export-banana, we eat for breakfast, lunch or desert could entirely disappear from the menu." This is a quotation by French Geneticist Emile Frisson, who chairs the International Network for the Improvement of the Banana and Plantain (INIBAP). He and other scientists are worried about the consequences fungi could have in the near future on global health. 20040620

The effects of HIV / AIDS on children

Yvonne Heselmans
Over the past two decades, 20 million people have died of AIDS and 42 million people are infected by the HIV-virus worldwide. Three million of those infected are children. HIV/AIDS also has enormous consequences for children who are not infected themselves. Africa, for example, has 11 million AIDS orphans. In Uganda 12% of the population is orphan. Given the current peak on HIV-infected people, 2010 expects a peak of orphans. The total number of children orphaned by HIV/AIDS worldwide will have doubled to 25 million by then. To protect the rights of children Plan Netherlands is campaigning to pay more international attention on the effects of Aids on children. To tackle the effects of aids it is essential to recognise the medical challenges but also the social-economic challenges of the pandemic. 20040626

With the American government now spending over 40.2 billion dollars on 'homeland security' and the European Commission appointing a special anti-terrorism coordinator, terrorism indeed seems to be a hot item on the global political agenda. As a potential threat to the wellbeing of millions, terrorism is a relevant medical issue. How do healthcare professionals prepare for terrorism, and cope with its bloody aftermath?
